Professor Lahey specializes in issues concerning women and taxation, gender analysis, and poverty in conjunction with her teaching in tax law, policy, and equality law, and has been involved in equality cases brought under the Canadian Charter of Rights and Freedoms. She was the founding editor of the Canadian Journal of Women and the Law, has served on the Ontario Fair Tax Commission (working groups on women and taxation, and corporate taxation), the Law Reform Commission of Canada Advisory Panel on Adult Relationships, and the Ontario Advisory Council on Women's Issues, and has been involved in gender training and fiscal gender analysis in a wide array of contexts. She is the author of numerous papers and studies on women and fiscal policy, including Women and Employment: Removing Fiscal Barriers to Women's Wageforce Participation(Status of Women Canada, 2005/6), The Tax/Benefit Unit in Fiscal Policy(Law Commission of Canada, 2002), The Impact of Legal Recognition on Lesbian Women in Canada (Status of Women Canada, 2001), and The Gender Budget: Gender-Based Analysis of Revenues and Expenditures(House of Commons Standing Committee on the Status of Women, 2007-2008), a series of gender impact studies carried out for the Standing Committee as part of its gender budget study.
